Melvin J. Shimon, age 89, of 9527 Hilltop Road, Cato, died unexpectedly Thursday, December 29, 2016 at his residence. Melvin was born on May 9, 1927, in the town of Franklin, son of the late Adolph and Barbara (Chizek) Shimon. Melvin graduated with the class of 1945 from Manitowoc Lincoln High School and joined the United States Navy in April of 1945 and served until in September of 1946. He courageously served in WWII as a Seaman First Class in the South Pacific. On October 21, 1950, he married the former Dolores C. Zipperer at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Alverno. Melvin worked as a Core Maker for Eck Foundry for 40 years until his retirement in 1989 and also farmed in the town of Cato.Melvin was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, member and past treasurer of St. Michael Holy Name Society, member and past commander of Kubale O'Connell VFW Post #6179 of Kellnersville, member and past president of ADD and member of the Whitelaw Senior Citizens. He enjoyed polka music, dartball, deer hunting, and playing Sheepshead. In 2011, Melvin was thankful for visiting Washington D.C. on a veteran's "Honor Flight".He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years: Dolores Shimon, Cato; eleven children and their spouses: Michael Shimon; Margie (Joe) Puta; Barbara (Terry) Rush; Mary Ann (Mark) Knier; Paul Shimon; Steven (Sandy) Shimon; Patrick (Jean) Shimon; Bernadine Shimon; Beverly (Rick) Evenson; Carolyn (Chad) Christel; Peter (Wen) Shimon; 33 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and one due in January; one brother: Bernard Shimon, Manitowoc; one sister: Olive Fischer, Manitowoc; one sister-in-law: Irene Shimon, Manitowoc, nieces, nephews other relatives and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter: Susan Shimon; one daughter-in-law: Karen Shimon; three brothers: John Shimon; Joseph Shimon; Adolph Shimon; four sisters-in-law: Evelyn Shimon; Cecilia Shimon; Martha Shimon; Grace Shimon; one brother-in-law: Jim Fischer.Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 5, 2017, at St. Michael Catholic Church, 110 West Menasha Avenue, Whitelaw. The Rev. Richard Klingeisen will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial with burial to follow in the parish cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by the Kubale-O'Connell VFW Post #6179 of Kellnersville. Relatives and friends may call on Wednesday at the church from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services at 11:00 a.m. There will be a parish prayer service at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday led by Randy Meidl.
