Joyce Amato Obituary

Joyce Amato, age 93, formerly of Manitowoc and currently of Wisconsin Veterans Home at King, passed away Saturday, December 16, 2017 at ThedaCare Medical Center, Waupaca. Joyce was born on January 10, 1924, in New Holstein, daughter of the late C. Elmer and Lillian (Reichart) Nesheim. She attended local area schools in Manitowoc and graduated with the class of 1941 from Manitowoc Lincoln High School, and continued her education at the University of Minnesota. Joyce then served in the United States Marine Corps women reserves from 1944 until her discharge in 1946, achieving the rank of Corporal. She worked as a draftsman at Hamilton's and Brillion Iron Works until her retirement in 1986. Joyce was a member of First Lutheran Church and Altar Guild, Sons of Norway, member and past Commander of Drews-Bleser American Legion Post #88, first woman 6th District Commander, 20/4 Honor Society of Women Legionnaires and was a volunteer at Woodland Dunes and Maritime Museum. She enjoyed knitting, gardening and crafts. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law: Greg (Elaine) Amato, Green Bay; Mark (Margaret) Amato, Mequon; five grandchildren: James Amato; Tracey Faulkender; Michael Amato; Dominic Amato; Austin Amato; six nieces: Susan Mitchell; Cynthia Smith; Lori Sheppard; Kristine Dunn; Victoria Hallin; Jacqueline Backes, other relatives and friends also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son: Craig Amato; one brother: Jack Nesheim.A Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 30, 2017 at First Lutheran Church, 521 North 8th Street, Manitowoc. Rev. Roald Harswick will officiate. Military Honors will be accorded by Drews-Bleser American Legion Post #88. Burial of her cremated remains will take place at Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery, King, WI at a later date. Relatives and friends may call at the church on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. Memorials may be made to the Drews-Bleser American Legion Post #88 or Woodland Dunes. The Jens Family Funeral Home & Crematory of Manitowoc is assisting the family with arrangements.
